Snoring in children – why it shouldn't be ignored
Parents often feel that it is snoring in children is harmless, so it is not given much attention. However, persistent, loud snoring, especially if accompanied by pauses in breathing, can be a sign obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) – a serious condition that can have a negative impact on the child's growth, development and daily functioning.
What is obstructive sleep apnea?
OSA presents cessation of breathing during sleep due to partial or complete obstruction of the airway. In children, it often occurs due to enlarged tonsils, allergies, but also due to anatomical jaw problems, such as a retruded lower jaw or a narrow palate.
